Enrique Iglesias' Miami

October 1, 2002

Quizás, his first all-Spanish album in five years, just hit stores, but when he's not in the studio or on tour, this muy caliente crooner hits the hot spots in his hometown of Miami.

Enrique Iglesias’ music is global, but his life is local. His hometown of Miami is his base of operations, where he skippers both his lightning-fast Cigarette boat and a musical career that has produced sales of 30 million albums and earned him 13 number-one singles and a slew of awards. The son of Julio Iglesias and Philippines-born ex-model Isabel Preysler, Enrique just released Quizás (which means “perhaps”), his first all-Spanish album in five years. In early 2003, he’ll be seen in movie theaters alongside Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Johnny Depp in his feature-film debut, Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Until then, here’s a weekend with Enrique Iglesias in the city of eternal sunshine, seduction, and style.

FRIDAY

LODGING

“The Tides Hotel on Ocean Drive has a laid-back atmosphere with an elegant art-deco decor. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the service is great. It also has a great pool area, you’re right on the beach, and you can walk to a wide selection of restaurants and boutiques. The Pelican Hotel was decorated by Diesel, the designer clothing company, and was recently renovated. It’s very cool. There’s a sidewalk terrace restaurant. We did the video for my new Spanish album’s first single, ‘Mentiroso,’ at the Pelican.”

DINNER

“I love Bond ST. Lounge at the Townhouse Hotel in Miami Beach. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Miami. It’s a Japanese place that does things very modern and new. It’s the best sushi in town. Osteria del Teatro in Miami Beach has a great Italian menu.”

NIGHTLIFE

“I’m more laid-back and would probably go to the movies at the Regal Cinema. But if you want a little more excitement, there are the famous clubs on South Beach. People don’t arrive at most of the clubs until midnight. The best ones? Mynt is a local crowd — mostly because it’s difficult to get in — including a lot of celebrities. In the basement level they play hip-hop, and in the upper level they play dance music and techno. Rumi is also an after-midnight place. Thursday nights are the best, but it’s open all weekend. Rumi has all types of music — hip-hop, ’70s, ’80s, Latin, and more. Pearl has dance, hip-hop, and techno music.”

SATURDAY

BREAKFAST

“The Front Porch Café rocks. It’s the new, happening place for breakfast, right on the beach. Their multigrain pancakes are great. It’s an all-day indoor/outdoor cafe. Everyone goes there.”

SIGHTS

"[You have to go to] South Beach. There are a million people around, riding scooters or just walking in their shorts and bathing suits. Anywhere on Ocean Drive, you can see the South Beach scene. Lincoln Road is just one long pedestrian strip, no cars allowed. The sidewalk is part of the scene. Just take a walk down Lincoln Road and you’ll see stores, restaurants, clubs, art galleries, movie theaters, everything. Coconut Grove is an area of Miami that’s a lot more laid-back, not as many people, but there are stores and restaurants and theaters. Then there’s Calle Ocho, the Cuban section of Miami, which is like a trip to Havana.”

CULTURE

“I love the Museum of Science. It’s connected to the planetarium, which has educational shows every day and great laser shows on Friday nights. The Miami Sea quarium in Virginia Key does the shows with the whales, the dolphins, and the seals. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is gorgeous, a favorite place for weddings. It used to be a mansion, the winter home for the International Harvester company founder. Now it’s a National Historic Landmark. Its gardens are filled with flowers, and the house is filled with great art. Fairchild Tropical Garden is almost 100 acres of tropical plants and trees and birds, alligators, lizards, and more. My favorite museums are the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Art Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.”

SWIMMING

“The Venetian Pool in Coral Gables is the most beautiful swimming pool in the world. It was made from coral rock in 1923, and has coral caves and waterfalls. It’s in the National Register of Historic Places. They refill it every day with fresh water. It’s a great place to swim.”

LUNCH

“Nemo on South Beach has the best lunch menu in town. It’s new American. The two best dishes are the wok-charred salmon and the crispy prawn salad. Carpaccio at Bal Harbour Shops, one of Miami’s most expensive shopping malls, is known for its salads.”

PARKS

My favorite park is Kennedy Park, which backs onto a beautiful bay in Coconut Grove. They’ve gated a huge area for dogs to play in so the dogs don’t have access to the road. They also put water out for the dogs. Everybody takes their dogs there. I take my golden retriever, Grammy, which my record company gave me as a gift when I won the Grammy in 1996. Grammy loves Kennedy Park. There are workout stations along the pathway, so you can walk your dog and work out at the same time. There’s also Tropical Park, which is a huge park on Bird Road with softball fields, tennis courts, soccer fields, everything.”

WATERSPORTS

“I like boating and water-skiing on the bay. I have a Lip-Ship Edition Cigarette boat, which I love to spend as much time on as possible. Miami has the perfect weather for boating because it’s always sunny and the water is always warm and clean. You can stay out on the boat as long as you want, and if you get hungry you can dock at restaurants like Scotty’s Landing or Monty’s in Coconut Grove or Sundays on the Bay in Key Biscayne for lunch. They’re all indoor/outdoor seafood places, where the more casual you dress, the better.”

COFFEE BREAK

“Miami is famous for its Cuban food and Cuban coffee. You can get the best at restaurants on Calle Ocho like Versailles, La Carreta, and La Casita. And you can get Cuban coffee, to drink there or to take home, pretty much everywhere in Calle Ocho.”

DINNER

“Zahbo in South Miami is one of my favorites. The food is a mix of Italian, Asian, and Latin American. The ambience is casual, and it has indoor/outdoor seating. My favorite dish is the osso buco. Amalfi in Coral Gables is good, too. It’s Italian with great pasta and a big wine list. It’s a nice family-owned restaurant. You feel like you’re eating in their home. If you catch stone crab season, which is mid-October through mid-May, don’t miss Joe’s Stone Crab. It’s the best stone crab in the world, and everybody knows it. The wait is sometimes three hours long.”

NIGHTLIFE

“Jazid on South Beach has great live jazz. The crowd is trendy mixed, both locals and out-of-towners. It’s a small, intimate setting, with sofas, chairs, and coffee tables. It’s a really cool place with a great bar. Satchmo’s in Coral Gables has local bands. It’s a huge restaurant, with outdoor seating and a little outdoor stage. You can go for happy hour — or you might end up staying for the whole night. If you’re into locally produced plays, The Coconut Grove Playhouse (pictured above) has tremendous theater.”

SUNDAY

BRUNCH

“I like to sleep in on Sundays, but a good place to go for brunch is Nemo on South Beach. On Sundays, Nemo’s has an endless buffet. The food is a little of everything: vegetarian, new American, Asian, Indian. There’s also an endless dessert buffet. It’s the perfect place to start your Sunday.”

ONE SPECIAL DAY

“I used to really be into windsurfing. I would get to Virginia Key Beach on Key Biscayne at 3 in the morning. It’s a little beach that’s very popular for windsurfing. I’d check the weather, and if I knew it would be a windy day, I’d set the alarm clock for 2 a.m., then drive to the beach and sleep in my Jeep so I could get the first waves when the sun came up. It’s really quiet and peaceful on Virginia Key Beach at that time. You feel like you’re the last windsurfer on earth. By the time more surfers would come, around 9 or 10, I’d already be gone, headed back home to sleep.”
